tracks i deploy to

a playlist for shipping things without crying

Here's a truth nobody puts in the runbooks: every deploy has a soundtrack. You can have the cleanest pipeline in the world, but if you're pushing to production in dead silence, you're doing it wrong. Silence is where the doubt lives. Silence is where you start re-reading the diff for the ninth time.

I learned this the hard way, years ago, hunched over a laptop at 11pm watching a migration run with nothing but the fan noise for company. Never again. Now the playlist goes on before the pipeline starts. It's part of the process. It's basically infrastructure.

These are the tracks that have carried more releases to production than any tool I've ever used. Mostly synthwave, some electronic, a little lo-fi for the tense moments. Opinionated? Extremely. Correct? Also yes.

$ cat playlist.txt

  1. Kavinsky - Nightcall 92 bpm. The focus anthem. This is the sound of a person who has read the migration plan twice and is not afraid.
  2. Perturbator - Humans Are Such Easy Prey For when the deploy is technically optional but you've decided to feel like a hacker anyway.
  3. HOME - Resonance The "green pipeline, lean back in the chair" track. Tastes like cold brew and success.
  4. Gunship - Tech Noir Seven minutes of cinematic synth for deploys that deserve a movie trailer voiceover.
  5. Com Truise - Brokendate Glitchy and warm. Pairs well with tailing logs and pretending you understand all of them.
  6. Tycho - A Walk For the calm, boring deploys. The best kind. Nobody writes songs about those, except Tycho, apparently.
  7. Nujabes - Feather Lo-fi for rollback situations. Keeps the heart rate under control while you fix what you broke.
  8. Carpenter Brut - Turbo Killer Friday, 4:55pm, one last deploy. You shouldn't. But this song makes you believe you can.
  9. Lorn - Acid Rain Heavy, moody, slightly menacing. For deploying to legacy infrastructure that remembers everything.
  10. Makeup and Vanity Set - Chrome The closer. For when it's done, it works, and you're the only one awake who knows why.

$ echo "final thoughts"

The pattern here isn't subtle: steady tempo, no surprises, low lyrical density. Deploy music should keep your hands moving and your panic dormant. Vocals are for writing code. Synths are for shipping it.

Also, yes, I have a separate playlist for incidents. It's shorter and angrier. Maybe that's a future post.

Taste is subjective, of course. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But if your deploy playlist is just lo-fi beats to relax/study to on loop, your opinion is wrong and I will be praying for your uptime.

Ship responsibly. Ship with Nightcall.
